No toil and trouble here — this sweet, foamy punch is surrounded by billowing vapor to create a witchy drink everyone will love, and it's so easy to make. Read on and I'll show you how to create a spooky Halloween punch bowl of Smoking Witch's Brew using dry ice and a few simple moves. Be sure to pay attention to the safety tips before you get started!

Dry Ice Safety Tips

Dry ice can be a really fun and exciting addition to your spooky gatherings, big or small. Kids especially love seeing the "smoke" come to life. Not only is it stunning to behold, but the dry ice helps keep the punch extra chilled. Before diving in, there are a few safety precautions you need to take when handling dry ice.

NEVER touch dry ice with bare hands

Dry ice is so cold that it can cause skin burns and even frostbite. We recommend using long-handled tongs to handle the dry ice. You can also opt for thick, insulated gloves. You can use one or both of these methods. Note: Regular kitchen gloves or oven mitts WILL NOT provide adequate protection against dry ice. And while we recommend not putting your face anywhere near the dry ice, safety goggles can also be worn for extra precaution.

Use only in a well-ventilated area or outdoor party setting

Make sure that dry ice is always in a well-ventilated area. Dry ice vapor can cause severe illness — or worse — if it's in an enclosed space, and that's not the kind of fright night we're going for here. To ensure safety, you can set a table outside and serve your cauldron of Smoking Witch's Brew outdoors.

Never store dry ice in an airtight container

We recommend buying your dry ice the day you plan to use it and storing it on your back porch or near an open window (the meat department at your local grocery store often sells dry ice). DO NOT put dry ice into the refrigerator, freezer, or a tightly sealed cooler as this can cause it to explode.

DO NOT touch mouth to dry ice

While we have seen some recipes that recommend placing dry ice directly into your drinks, we do not recommend this. It's not worth the risk of it possibly touching your mouth and causing severe burns. Instead, we'll teach you how to give the effect of smoking punch without putting the dry ice directly into your drink.

How to Make Smoking Witch's Brew

What you'll need:

  • 1 large punch bowl with serving glasses and ladle
  • 1 small bowl
  • 1 heat-proof medium to large clear glass bowl (Pyrex works well; just make sure it's the right size to fit inside your punch bowl with a bit of space around it)
  • Dry ice pebbles (if you can't find pebbles, please be sure to ask the manufacturer for the safest way to break apart the dry ice into smaller chunks)
  • 1 batch of punch
  • 2–3 cups of water

Directions:

Follow all safety precautions listed above. If you didn't read them, please do so before continuing.

In a well-ventilated area, place your smallest bowl in the bottom of your large punch bowl, open face up, as seen below. This elevates your medium-sized bowl and gives it extra space underneath to add more airflow, creating more space for the smoke to billow.

Next, place your medium-sized bowl on top of the small bowl inside of the punch bowl. You should have a little space between the medium bowl and the punch bowl.

Using your long tongs (and gloves and safety goggles too, if you like) place small pebbles of the dry ice in the space between your medium-sized bowl and the punch bowl. We needed about 15 pieces to go all the way around the outside of our medium-sized bowl. The amount of pebbles you use may vary depending on the size of your bowl. Be careful not to get any dry ice inside the medium-sized bowl. This is where our punch will go.

Carefully pour prepared punch into the medium-sized bowl. We love the recipe we used because the sherbert mixes with the ginger ale to create foam and bubbles that go perfectly with the Smoking Witch's Brew theme.

To create your smoke vapor, slowly pour water over the dry ice. Get ready for the oooohs and aaaaaahs!
