Sauerkraut is a popular New Year's food, as German tradition suggests it brings good fortune. The Pennsylvania Dutch, for example, pair it with pork for the holiday as part of their New Year's good luck foods. It's only fair, then, to celebrate it this week on hot dogs, burgers, and perhaps even in a pint of ice cream. (Gross? Perhaps. Real? Yes.)
To celebrate the rich history of sauerkraut in the New Year, Urban Churn in Harrisburg, Pa. scoops up Sauerkraut Ice Cream. Interestingly, the flavor has become famous all over the United States, Canada, Australia and even England.
Urban Churn makes some killer ice cream in general. Their sauerkraut just earns them a bit more spotlight this time of year. They use high-quality sauerkraut and churn their dairy with a little lemon juice for acidity. They also have a lemon pickled kraut so you can top your bowl with that extra bit of lemony taste too.
On their site, the ice cream makers say of the sauerkraut ice cream's flavor, "Sauerkraut typically has a PH level of 4.6 or lower. This acidity, when introduced to a churning dairy, results in a buttermilk taste. With little bits of sauerkraut throughout, you get a tangy bite with buttermilk vanilla flavour."
You can get the ice cream at the store at Broad Street Market anytime from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, for New Year's Eve. Cost is between $6 and $16. But it's only available in store, so you can't buy it unless you live close by. But if want 2020 to be big, bold, and brilliant (and you live near Harrisburg), you may need to dig into some sauerkraut. And this pint seems like a pretty cool way to do it.
