When you think about fast-food restaurants, you probably think of burgers, fries, and chicken nuggets as being menu staples. But what about salads? Most fast food salads are just sad, but Wendy's salads are next-level good.
How did salads become an iconic menu item at Wendy's and what makes them taste so delicious that customers can't get enough?
The History of Wendy's Salads
The very first Wendy's opened in 1969 and salads were nowhere to be seen at the establishment. In fact, there were only five menu items at the first Wendy's restaurant: hamburgers, french fries, soft drinks, the Frosty, and chili.
But 10 years later, Dave Thomas' restaurant added a salad bar to "diversify the options for those who wanted to go green with its meals," according to Wendy's. Then, in 1992, after years of gaining popularity, Wendy's launched salads on the menu as a to-go item. The first to-go salad options included Grilled Chicken, Taco Caesar, Deluxe Garden, and side salads. Wendy's then phased out its iconic salad bar in 2006.
As you may know, those salads are no longer offered at Wendy's. That's because in 2010 Wendy's revamped its entrée salad menu to include Apple Pecan Chicken, BLT Cobb, Spicy Chicken Caesar, and Baja. While today's offerings are similar, only the Apple Pecan Salad is still available for purchase.
But what about the fan-favorite Taco Salad? The Taco Salad was originally available in the '80s but didn't make the 2010 menu cut. However, in 2016 Wendy's brought back the Taco Salad and it remains one of the four staples on the salad menu.
Today, Wendy's salad menu includes Parmesan Caesar Salad, Southwest Avocado Ranch, Taco Salad, and Apple Pecan Salad.
What Makes Wendy's Salads Taste So Good?
Wendy's salads have become an iconic addition to the menu, but what exactly makes them so good that keeps customers coming back for more?
It all starts with the ingredients. You've heard it before: Wendy's uses fresh, never-frozen ingredients in all its items. This includes fresh beef, applewood-smoked bacon, and seasonal produce.
To capitalize on the freshness, Wendy's employees make everything the same day. So, you'll always have freshly cooked chili, bacon, and chicken, and freshly chopped lettuce and tomatoes. That's why the chili is still hot and the bacon is always crispy when you bite into your salad.
The assembly is also key. Unlike most fast-food salads, Wendy's keeps its salad ingredients separate. So if you order a Taco Salad, for example, you'll get a bowl filled with the veggies and cheese, plus individual servings of the salsa, sour cream, chili, and chips. This allows customers to dress their salad however they want it. It also prevents the salad from becoming soggy and oversaturated while you make your way from the drive-through to your final destination.
The final reason might just be a psychological thing. But food just tastes better when it's convenient and prepared for you. In fact, studies have shown that food actually does taste better when someone else makes it. This is because when you make your own food, you spend a lot of time thinking about it, which makes you enjoy it less later. But when something is made for you, you haven't already "pre-consumed" it while you were putting it together and you will be able to enjoy it more.
So if you needed any more of a reason to go grab a fresh and tasty Wendy's salad, we think you just found one.
