Chick-fil-A Customers Claim You Get the Same Amount of Fries No Matter the Size You Order—So We Tested It

Everything you need to know about Chick-fil-A's Fry Gate.

In a world filled with shrinkflation and inflation, it’s normal for customers to want to know that they’re getting a good bang for their buck. So, if rumors start to arise that they might not be getting the best deal, it’s safe to say customers aren’t too happy.

Recently, Chick-fil-A came under fire for what’s been deemed “Fry Gate,” after a social media user claimed that no matter what size you order, you’ll always get the same amount of fries. The TikTok video, which has been viewed more than 1.4 million times, shows two customers counting the fries in each order—for reference, Chick-fil-A sells small, medium, and large options.

They counted 12 fries in the small, 12 fries plus some smaller pieces in the medium, and 14 fries in the large.

“Yeah, that’s still not worth it,” user Jenna Wood says.

The comments section was full of TikTok users agreeing that their fries are “NEVER full” and that they feel “cheated” by Chick-fil-A if fries aren’t “spilling out” of the container.

However, some commenters said you’d need to weigh the fries to really determine if you get the same amount—so Wood did.

In a follow-up video, Wood weighed the three fry sizes on a food scale to see if they got the same results—and they basically did. The small fry weighed 96 grams, the medium fry weighed 118 grams (which came to two fries more), and while they never said the large fry's weight, they said it was three fries more, which would equal about 151 grams total.

“Shouldn’t it have more than three fries? We know that the large has more; it just needs more than three fries more,” Wood says.

“The reality is, every time I get the large, I’m disappointed because I feel like it has the same amount, and it basically does,” Wood’s husband says. “Three extra fries is almost nothing.”

After Wood’s video went viral, many TikTokers took to the platform to put the theory to the test. While some claimed that Chick-fil-A doesn’t rip you off with the fries, others claimed that it does—so, obviously, we had to try it as well.

Does Chick-fil-A Always Give You the Same Amount of Fries?

We ordered the three fries and counted how many were in each. Now, the first discrepancy is what you consider a fry. When we counted, we only included the full fries, not the little nubs and pieces you get at the bottom.

Our small had five full fries, our medium had eight full fries, and our large had seven full fries—the rest of the container was filled with bits and pieces. Obviously, some of those pieces still count for something, but are the tiny nubs worth the price difference? That’s for you to decide.

In the end, we determined that the medium—or better yet, two smalls—provided the best value for the number of fries that we received—but Fry Gate really is all relative and can depend on the Chick-fil-A restaurant that you order from. So, like most internet claims, take it with a grain of salt.
