I used a dashi packet. It has kelp and whole dried fish in it. I also added some mushrooms. The onion isn't onion, and I forget the name of it - it's like a small leek, but more tender.
I made this recipe because my grocery store didn't have any in a can. I knew not to expect that flavor, but I did expect there to be more flavor than this recipe has. All the trouble, with none of the payoff.

I doubled the sugar, and went with 4 sticks of butter, deleting the margarine. Tastes great!
