I loved the dough recipe here! I was able to make exactly 20 bierocks out of it. If you cut the dough in half and then make 10 balls of dough from each half that is the easiest way to do it. I did change up the filing quite a bit. I added 2 diced potatoes and garlic, and punched up the spices significantly with Worcestershire sauce, garlic pepper and garlic powder, paprika and cracked black pepper. These turned out so good. My youngest ate 4 of them!
I used just 1/2 C of oil and substituted 1/2 C apple sauce for the rest of the oil. I decreased the sugar to 1 1/2 C as well. I feel 1 C of oil is way too much. These were tasty the way I made them.
If you want a slow cooker recipe because you really are willing to wait all day then this is the recipe for you. Don't make this if you think canned soup in a recipe is boring. Give it a try if you love comfort food and are on a low budget so you need to purchase cheaper cuts of meat. 8-10 hours on LOW, I repeat, 8-10 hrs on low will produce a roast that turns out easy to shred up. I purchased a cut of meat labeled 'london broil' but it was indeed a cheaper roast. Patience is a virtue here, do not open the lid to check on it. Trust your slow cooker to do its job. Serve over unseasoned rice, mashed potatoes or pasta and be done. The extra salt can be minimized by the suggestions of other reviewers. If you know you need a lower sodium meal use low sodium soups. I used a small can of tomato sauce instead of soup and added a splash of half and half, this turned out fabulous and did not have that purely tomato flavor, just tasted like gravy.
I prefer butter to oil in bread recipes, used 1 stick of Land O Lakes. I also used 1 cup white sugar and 1/3 cup brown sugar (instead of 1 1/2 cups white sugar). It was plenty sweet. I like to add a rounded tsp of spices as well and added 1 tsp vanilla extract. My oh my was this light and sweet. Had enough extra for 12 mini muffins. Thank you!
