We’ve all been there: A recipe calls for only a portion of the canned contents and you’re stuck with an open container of the leftover ingredient. While some items might not be worth saving, a versatile ingredient like pumpkin purée is too useful to discard. But how long will it last once opened? According to a representative at Libby’s, leftover pumpkin can last one week in the refrigerator and up to three months in the freezer. Either way, the key is to store the purée in an airtight container to ensure it maintains its flavor.
How to Store Leftover Pumpkin Purée in the Fridge
While it’s safe to store opened canned goods in the original container, according to the USDA, we recommend transferring the food to an airtight container for optimal flavor. If you’re planning to use the purée within seven days, it’s best to store it in the refrigerator. Simply scoop your leftover pumpkin into a plastic or glass container within two hours of opening the can. Seal the container and label with the date so you’ll know how long it’s been stored.
How to Freeze Leftover Pumpkin Purée
If you aren’t planning on using the leftovers within the week, you’ll want to freeze them. Libby’s recommends leaving a bit of room at the top of the container for the pumpkin to expand when frozen. When the pumpkin thaws, it may appear to separate due to air bubbles. This won’t affect its taste or texture in your recipes. One handy suggestion is to spoon pumpkin purée into ice cube trays or mini silicone muffin cups and freeze. Once the purée is frozen, just pop the cubes out, transfer to a freezer-safe storage bag or container, and label with the date. Defrost individual cubes as needed.
