Sausage is one of my favorite ingredients to keep on hand—it has a long storage life, is easy to cook in various ways, tastes great with so many foods, and comes in many different varieties. A recent thread on Reddit got a lot of action after someone posted a photo of sliced sausage with onions and peppers in a cast iron skillet, for a quick, tasty and simple “favorite cheap meal,” which inspired users to reply with their go-to sausage combinations, too. You could literally scroll through the Reddit thread for hours, checking out users’ suggestions, but here are a couple of the top picks to try.

1. Sausage With Noodles, Rice or Pasta

Many users discussed cooking sausage with noodles, pasta or rice. One Redditor, named highgyjiggy, recommended adding cabbage, commenting, “Egg noodles and some fried cabbage,” for an easy 3-ingredient meal.

For a sausage pasta dish, Reddit user Duhq, shared this cooking technique, “I had this exact dinner tonight with what I call pasotto—you cook pasta in very little water and butter, kind of risotto style adding a little at a time. The starch from the pasta thickens the water into an amazing sauce, then you mix your meat and veg in.”

Rice was also popular, and Redditor QueerQwerty said, “I do this on top of Beef Rice A Roni. Add a spike of soy sauce.” Some users suggested adding spices or garlic to the sausage and rice dish, too.

2. Sausage With Potatoes

Potatoes and sausage were a big hit on the thread for breakfast or “breakfast for dinner.” Some people talked about sticking with a traditional white potato, while others said they prefer the pairing with a sweet potato. “I had this for breakfast at our local greasy spoon yesterday, add potatoes with eggs on top and pancakes on the side,” said Reddit user BridgeF0ur.

Another Reddit user Loubbe commented, “Mix in a sweet potato as well! My ma used to make a kinda hash like that and it's to die for.” The user also suggested adding onions, “Onions, sweet and russet taters, sliced polish sausage and sliced onion fried up in the [grease of your choice (I just use regular canola oil).”

3. Sausage and Eggs

Users were in agreement on pairing sausage with eggs, and either enjoying with waffles and pancakes for breakfast or over grains, noodles, or greens for lunch or dinner. One Redditor suggested making a skillet meal with four ingredients: eggs, sausage, sweet potato and spinach. For spices and more flavoring, several users mentioned using cayenne pepper, garlic and red pepper flakes.

4. Sausage and Pineapple

For a sweeter meal, try sausage with pineapple. Reddit user Shortstack1980 wrote, “Fresh pineapple grilled with the sausage, peppers, and onions and served over rice. Sprinkle some scallions to be fancy. One of my favorite dinners.” As for sauce, you can go with something sweet, or use vinegar and oil, or barbecue sauce. “Add pineapple and your favorite bbq sauce,” said user wrong_marinade. If you don’t like pineapple, you can swap it for apple, another suggestion from the thread.
