Pretty good recipe for something as simple as French Toast. I use 6 slices of shokupan (Japanese hotel bread) to soak up the batter and it turns quite custard-like in the middle. My tweaks included using 1 teaspoon of double strength vanilla extract (instead of doubling the amount of single strength) and a 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda for the browning effect. I also add 1/2 tsp of cardamom along with the cinnamon, 'cause I love me some cardamom. Because there are only 6 slices of shokupan, I usually have a good bit of batter left over. I saw the tip about freezing left over slices so next time, I'll buy extra bread to soak and then freeze for a quick breakfast.
Super simple base recipe. I liked using the melted butter instead of creaming sugar & butter together. It saves a step & no need to clean a mixer.~~~~Following previous comments, I used a half teaspoon of baking soda with half teaspoon of baking powder to get a bit more rise. The recipe calls for 3 bananas but doesn't mention how much they weigh. I used 4 smallish bananas that totaled 350 grams or 12.5 oz (peeled) and got plenty of banana flavor.~~~The salt was decreased a little bit and the sugar was half white & half dark brown.~~~ And of course, I spiced it up with a teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of cardamom, 1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger, & 1/2 teaspoon allspice.~~~ I'm glad to report that no over mixing occurred! :D~~~ The loaf was dense, mildly sweet, & full of flavor.Next time, I may increase the powder/soda amounts to see if the loaf rises more.~~~ Definitely keeping this recipe on hand for more yummy goodness.
Very tasty. This will be a meal we'll make again due how easy it is. The recipe doesn't specify the weight of the potatoes so I went with 6 Yukon Gold, medium-sized, and that made plenty of mashed potatoes for the top. The addition of the beef broth (I used Better Than Bullion - Roasted Beef paste) really punched up the flavor. Instead of the raw carrots, I used a half bag of frozen mixed veggies with carrots, green beans, corn, and peas and mixed them in after the broth was added into the beef mixture so the vegetables wouldn't get too mushy.Shredded Mexican blend cheese and shredded Parmesan cheese to top the potatoes and make it brown and bubbly.I'm looking forward to the leftovers for lunch! :)
Quick and easy using an Instant Pot. I doubled the spices but next time will use more onion, and add garlic and green pepper to punch up the flavors. I also added about a teaspoon of Cajun seasoning because I like that little burn on the back of my tongue. It's great as filling for burritos with the shredded cheese and adding some shredded lettuce or cabbage.I'll definitely be making this recipe again.
Quick and easy to make meal. I'll keep this one on rotation when I can find shrimp on sale.Modifications for the next time; LESS SALT. 1 Tsp is too much especially because the canned tomatoes are salty as well. I used both Aleppo pepper flakes and Urfa Biber pepper flakes for an excellent flavor blend that doesn't give too much heat. Increase the sliced onion to either a whole small or half a large onion. I used diced canned tomatoes and smooshed them to get them closer to crushed as stated in the recipe.Served over brown rice for a hearty winter meal.
Great base recipe for making sweet, and/or savory Dutch Babies. When I made the sweet version, I added 1 tsp vanilla extract, a home-made dessert blend of spices with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, & cardamom and topped with warm maple syrup. I followed the suggestions of using room temp eggs & milk and it puffed up just fine then deflated to a light, eggy pancake. Next up...savory style!
