What Is Listeria?

Listeria is a type of bacteria that can cause illness in the form of food poisoning, called Listeriosis. It’s a common reason for food recalls. Costco recently recalled ham products for possible Listeria contamination. Symptoms, which include diarrhea and vomiting, usually occur within 24 hours of consumption and can last up to three days. While most cases of Listeriosis are unpleasant, they are usually mild. Older adults, pregnant people, and those with compromised immune systems are susceptible to more severe symptoms. Anyone with severe symptoms, including a fever over 102 degrees F or dehydration, should seek medical attention.
