Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 4 servings

  • 3 cups day-old bread cubes

  • â…“ cup raisins

  • 1 ½ cups unsweetened applesauce

  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1 ½ cups milk

  • ½ cup white sugar

  • ¼ cup buttermilk

  • 2 eggs, beaten

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 dash ground cinnamon

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  2. Spread bread cubes and raisins in a 9x13-inch casserole dish. Mix applesauce, cinnamon, and nutmeg together in a small bowl. Pour mixture over bread.

  3. Mix milk, sugar, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract together in another bowl and pour over bread. Sprinkle top with a dash of cinnamon.

  4. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 1 hour.

Cook's Note:

You can use currants instead of raisins if you like.
