For the past month or so, Costco fans have rejoiced every time the warehouse club rolled out a new specialty item, including the pumpkin pie, pumpkin streusel muffins, and caramel apple mini cakes. Since summer faded into fall less than two weeks ago, those goodies are still on select Costco bakery shelves. But just as some of those fall items delighted shoppers by showing up in summer, we know some end-of-year holiday items will show up in early fall. In fact, one just did. Costco’s New Chocolate Cranberry Almond Bark Instagram’s Costcohotfinds spotted something she believes is brand new in the bakery department. “The Costco bakery just started making a white chocolate cranberry almond bark and I got my hands on it just as they were bringing it out,” said Laura Lamb, the voice behind the Instagram account. In the caption, she explains the container holds nearly 1.5 pounds of the bark made from 47-percent dark bittersweet chocolate, white chocolate, roasted almonds, and dried cranberries. The $9.99 she paid for it (about $6.50 per pound) was “worth every penny!!” What Is Chocolate Bark? Chocolate bark is a thin layer of chocolate studded with chunks of yumminess. In this case, there are two thin layers of white and dark chocolate. To make bark, melted chocolate is poured in a thin layer and topped with nuts, like in chocolate almond bark; dried fruit, like in caramel apple bark; candies, like in jellybean bark or peppermint bark; cookies, like in Oreo cookie bark; or other small snackable pieces. The bark is then allowed to cool and harden, and then it’s broken into smaller pieces. The origins of why it’s called bark are unclear. It might be because the chocolate ends up looking like tree bark, but there’s no definite proof of that. What Customers Think About Costco’s New Chocolate Bark Laura may think the bark is new, but some of her followers believe they’ve seen it at Costco before. “Not new..every fall and Xmas,” one told her. And another said, “Yep every year is 9.99 price tag.” New or returning, many Costco shoppers are excited about these sweet treats. We think the dried cranberries give it a decidedly holiday vibe, and that’s why it started to show up at Costco as we turned the calendar from September to October. With comments such as “For the love of all things chocolate. Gimme dat…….” and “I’m going to need about 3 boxes,” we’re thinking these will be the next bakery item flying off shelves.
